Lola's Suicide Attempt and Bono the Snake Killer

Matt and I alwasy joke around that Lola tries to kill herself at least twice a year. While we do laugh and think it's kind of funny, it really is pretty true! We've had so many "near death" experiences with her in the almost 6 (wow!) years that we've had her, that we just know to expect these suicide attempts. Here's a quick run down of the suicide attempts from the past (the ones that are on the top of my head, anyway): eating bug spray, eating over a pound of chocolate and having to be rushed to the emergency vet in Atlanta (we were up there on vacation), eating something (we still have no idea, grapes or raisins maybe) that shut her liver down to the point that they didn't know if it would restart itself again, eating Bono's dosage in doggy Tylenol (3x Lola's dosage), eating 4 bricks of charcoal, eating an entire bag of wood chips, and the list really goes on and on!

Since our neighbor burned up our yard (post still to come, I promise!) the grass around the bottom of our fence is gone, and Lola can get out! Thanks, Jambalaya! She seriously gets out 216854621 times a day if we put her outside at all. One day I drove home from work and Lola was running around the neighbor's yard. I just stopped the car in the road, opened the door (Lola saw me coming) and she hopped in the car and rode the rest of the way (about 100 feet) to the house with me. We got out and went inside and started playing with Matt and LL in LL's room.

After a couple of minutes of playing, I noticed that there was a little spot of blood on LL's ottoman. We started checking LL to make sure that it wasn't coming from her first. We couldn't see anything at all! Then we looked Lola over, too, and she looked fine! A minute or two later, Lola was standing by Matt and she shook her head and Matt had little blood droplets all over him!! We started looking her over and realized that there was a puncture wound on the back of her neck. I took her into the bathroom and started cleaning her up to see how bad it was, and I realized that this was deep!! I was really scared. I let Matt take over since I'm not good in really scary situations (even if it's my dog) and he said he didn't think it was that bad. We decided not to take her to the vet and just see if we could handle it ourselves. We used Matt's clippers to shave the hair around it, put some Neosporin on it, put gauze on it, and wrapped it in an old ace bandage. Luckily after a few days she was as good as new. Turns out, she punctured it on the underside of the fence during her "escape" that afternoon.

That same day, Matt called me outside to see Bono's "prize". Ugh! A snake! One had slithered into our fenced in part of the backyard, so Bono killed it! It was huge! I don't know how he didn't get bitten! He was so proud of himself, though. I'm just glad he didn't get hurt!

Hopefully we're done on suicide attempts (for both dogs) for a while now!

Another Day at the Park

In March I had a long weekend as a part of my "winter break".  I don't really get it, but I'll take any excuse that they'll come up with for a day off!  The Monday of my day off, I took Lorelai to the park across from Valdosta Middle School.  We don't get to go to the park very often because the nearest one is about 20 minutes away.  So not cool!  But LL LOVES to swing and go down slides, so I definitely plan to take her to the park a ton this summer.  It was pretty awesome because nobody was there, so we really had the place to ourselves.  Matt was working that day, but decided to stop by for a couple of minutes to play with us.  He wasn't there for very long, but we really enjoyed playing as a family for even a little while! Grammy even got to come by for a little bit, too!  Here are a few pictures from our day:

This girl loves to swing!

Painted Toenails

Lorelai had another "girly" first not long ago - painted toenails!

I didn't want to paint them before a year because, to me, she just seemed too young.  But it's gotten warm and it just fees like she's old enough now.  I got her her own itty-bitty nail polish in a pink with glitter in it.  It is so cute!

I have to wait until she's asleep to do them, but they really are the cutest thing on her little chubby feet!  I won't keep them painted all the time, but they sure are cute for now!

14 Months Old!

You are today, my sweet baby girl, 14 months old!  You had a wonderful day today, and, because it is Spring Break, I got to spend it with you!  While I went to a doctor's appointment this morning, you spent time at your Grammy and Pop's house helping them plant flowers in their yard.  Boy did you have fun!  You were outside for about 2 hours and you were so dirty when you got done that they had to give you a bath!  I got to their house right after your bath, and we all got to eat lunch together.  At the end of lunch, we both got a surprise - - - daddy!  He was able to leave work early to spend more time with us!  We got home after lunch and you were SOOOO tired that you slept for 3 hours (frm 1:30 - 4:30)!!  When you got up we played, folded laundry, ate dinner, played some more, took a bath, and then got in bed.  As I type this, I can hear you moving around in your room, talking, throwing your paci and blankets out of your crib, and trying to put yourself to sleep.  I love hearing your little night time noises!!  You're sleeping tonight in your cute pj's that Grammy just got you for Valentine's Day.  The ones with the hearts all over the pants and the bunny on the shirt!  So cute!  Here are a few things about you at this age:

You have 7 teeth - 4 on top and 3 on bottom.  You just got one of those top teeth yesterday!

You sleep all night long - from 7:00 - somewhere between 6:00 and 7:00.

You are trying to get over an ear infection right now.  You started this last weekend, but because of an allergic reaction to the 1st set of antibiotics, you are now on antibiotics for another 5 days.

Your Grammy's birthday is tomorrow.

You Daddy's birthday is Friday (today is Monday)

You love to growl and give kisses.

You can "moo" like a cow and say "baaa" like a sheep.

When you are asked, you can point to your hair, mouth, teeth, and bellybutton.

When we sing "If you're happy and you know it", you stomp your little right foot as hard as you can!

You love Lola so much, and Lola loves you!

You drink three milk sippies during the day, and you just have ice water the rest of the time.

You fed yourself with a fork for the first time by yourself at dinner tonight!

You know how to throw the ball for Lola.

You take one nap a day (most days) for 2-3 hours.

You LOVE to be outside and you love to ride in your car.

You have the best smile and the best laugh.

You're not walking on your own, yet, but you sure could if you wanted to!

I love you so much, little girl!  I'm so happy that you are my daughter!

To Do List

Don't "they" say (just for you, Dad!) that if you write goals and to-do lists down that you're more likely to actually get those things done?  Well, here's worth trying!  I've been crazy behind on blogging and I have a whole list of topics that I need to blog on.  I'm hoping that if I write all of those down here that I will be more likely to do it quickly and that (maybe!) others might help keep me accountable and motivate me.  So here's a list of upcoming blog posts:

  1. painted toenails
  2. hairstyles
  3. reading
  4. teeth
  5. day at the park
  6. Lola's suicide attempt and Bono's snake
  7. Easter pictures
  8. Easter Eggs
  9. Baking Easter Cookies
  10. Becky's clothes
  11. Mommy and Me
  12. Beth Moore
  13. Easter
  14. My Birthday
  15. Mother's Day
  16. Ben's Visit
  17. Cherry Blossom Festival Trip
  18. Matt's Birthday
And I'm contemplating starting a new "series" on here.  Not a new blog, just a new topic (?) that doesn't really follow our lives or LL.  What is it?  The following of our neighbors.  I really have SO much that I could blog about and it reall is pretty funny (and sometimes annoying/stupid) stuff.  But I haven't completely decided yet.  So we'll see.  First I need to work on these 11 topics!
